Upcoming event: “What can Learning Analytics do for EDI?” – Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) internal seminars at The OU

On February 6, 2025, Prof Miriam Fernandez will deliver a seminar about the role of Learning Analytics in promoting Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education. Universities in the UK are increasingly turning to AI applications, especially Predictive Learning Analytics; ensuring that AI technologies, particularly those supporting student journeys, are fair and inclusive, irrespective of students’ diverse backgrounds or characteristics supports the EDI work.

Abstract: This talk explores the role of Learning Analytics in promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in Higher Education. We will showcase a range of dashboards—Early Alert Indicators, Student-Facing, and EDI-specific dashboards—used at the Open University to identify and address awarding gaps. Additionally, we will share insights from our latest research on fairness and bias, examining how both algorithmic and human biases can shape the support provided to diverse student groups. By critically evaluating these systems, we aim to highlight strategies for fostering more equitable learning experiences through data-informed approaches.

This internal seminar will take place at the Jennie Lee Building.
